It looks like OCLC may be making some changes to the PURL service. The other day I found Big in Japan. It is a toolbox of Web services. Mash-up RSS feeds, RSS to e-mail, podcasting service, and elfURL among aother tools. ElfURL is a service to change a long URL into a shorter one. Much like Tiny URL. ElfURL adds the ability to tag the link. Big in Japan is worth a look. Maybe the folks at OCLC should investigate tagging the PURLs. Would that make it more acceptable to the community?

Actually, all we are doing is moving it from Solaris to Linux (which also involves a change in hardware). We hope to make the transition with as little impact on the service as possible.
